    Illegal wire tapping...

    >>If a President ordered the wiretap of a reporter to find out dirt on a political opponent, any court would most likely find this "unreasonable". However, if the reporter was found to be transmitting classifed US force movements in a time of war to an enemy agent, I imagine the tap would be acceptable.

First of all, it is not the prez, it is the agent. Does it take more time for an agent to obtain court order or prez order?

    >>It must be understood, that the US constitutional sytem, with its division of powers, works largely in the most important areas because right-thinking government officials follow it out their own respect for it. When they don't, and exposure of such actions convince the courts, or the legislature, or the voters that their actions were not justified by the situation, they will pay a price thru either court sanctions, impeachment, or being voted out of office.

Back to Nixon, I do not think he ordered Watergate break-in, but he abused his power and tried to cover up the crime, a human nature. Now, if he had the power, what kept Nixon from secretly arresting the reporters, labelling them as terrorists and shipping them to a foreign jail?
