Google's customer data could pose national security risk ...

For sovereign states, letting Google in to freely collecting data on the local population and then probably share the data with government agencies, such as NSA, is potentially a National Security Mistake.

The playground could be leveled if Google agrees to share data on Global Customers with any government of countries in which it operates.

    • you wish....

Google will work to develop tools to undermine Chinese green wall ( which was built on blatantly stolen code anyway and being sued) and it will fall like a dam being tunneled under by rodents. Then population there will understand the darkness they have been kept under.Great thing about it is China has no formal recourse in world court to stop or sue google not to make the tools to do this.

      • TCP-IP have 7 layers. The Internet is not that sophisticated to regulate if one really choose to.

Chinese government does not allow "social media" operated by foreign companies such as Facebook or Twitter in China simply because, in my view, these organizations could collect data on Chinese's social activities, and could be turned over to agencies such as NSA when it is so requested, let alone Media companies could manufacture fake news with impunity.

Yes, it is a question of "legal recourse".
