Groupon is turning into a big save for one of its earliest investors.
Venture-capital giant New Enterprise Associates is on the brink of a comeback, thanks to the huge return it is poised to reap from its investment in the growing coupon site.
Since 2008, NEA has invested about $15 million for a 20 percent stake in Groupon, a person familiar with the firm said. That is small bucks for what could turn into one of the biggest returns in venture-capital history.

Near Google Deal, Groupon Goes Shopping Itself
CHRIS V. NICHOLSON, On Wednesday December 1, 2010, 4:57 am EST
Groupon, the social buying site in talks to be acquired by Google, just got a little larger.
The company said late Tuesday that it would purchase three Asian start-ups and with them create Groupon sites in Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines and Taiwan. Terms for the deals were not disclosed.
Groupon is buying uBuyiBuy, Beeconomic and Atlaspost, all of which will take on its brand and format. All three are involved in social buying, with Atlaspost of Taiwan having begun as a location-based social network.
Groupon said that the acquisitions would bring its worldwide subscribers to 33 million, and extend its operations to 35 countries.
