Buddy Media Raises $54M For Brand-Focused Social Media Management Platform

Leena Rao Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Buddy Media, a company that provides Facebook Page and social media management tools to brands, has raised $54 million in Series D funding led by GGV Capital with Institutional Venture Partners, Bay Partners and Insight Venture Partners. This brings Buddy Media’s total funding to just under $90 million. GGV partner Jeff Richards has joined the Buddy Media Board of Directors. One of Facebook’s first ad sales execs, Kevin Colleran, has also joined the company’s board of advisors.

Of course, as more brands look to social media for engagement with consumers, Buddy Media is reaping the benefits. The company’s revenue has more than doubled since the end of 2010. Last year, Lazerow told us that Buddy Media was on track to make $20 million in sales, so revenue could be at least $40 million

Towards an Automatic Parameter-Tuning Framework for Cost Optimization on Video Encoding Cloud
Xiaowei Li, Yi Cui, and Yuan Xue
Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN 37235, USA

      Received 15 May 2011; Revised 27 September 2011; Accepted 11 October 2011

Online video vendors like YouTube [4], Youku [5], and Tudou [6] have a huge number of videos of various formats uploaded by users every day, which need to be transcoded (format converted) into their desired intermediate formats, such as  .flv, for storage and replay. Such transcoding work is computing-intensive and time-consuming. It also requires storage space and bandwidth for transfer, which pose extremely high demands on hardware resources. Many content owners (libraries, traditional media production units, and governments) have the need to digitize and distribute their contents, but no technical resources/expertise to do so. With the introduction of cloud computing, a new type of Internet service termed encoding cloud emerges, which builds on the cloud infrastructure (e.g., Amazon EC2) to provide value-added video encoding service to meet the aforementioned demands. A successful example is Flix Cloud [7], which combines On2’s Flix Engine encoding software with Zencoder’s web-based application to provide scalable online encoding service based on Amazon EC2.

    • Why it takes them so long to "remove" dependency on ON2's FlixCloud? So, it's NOT so easy to build a PRODUCT in a few months, or even a year or two?

      Announcing Zencoder API V2
Over the past few weeks we’ve been quietly slipping mentions of API V2 in to our documentation and its usage has slowly increased. We’re now ready to officially announce V2 of the Zencoder API. We’re introducing versioning into our API because it makes it easier for us to introduce changes without breaking backwards compatibility, plus it makes it easier for developers working with Zencoder to transition to new versions when it’s convenient for them.

The Flixcloud API will be removed at this time as well, on June 1st, 2012. Any Flixcloud users who migrated to Zencoder when it was shut down will need to switch over to use the Zencoder API now. As always you can contact support with any questions you have as you make the transition.

      • ON2 made deals with Zencoder in 2008:

After two years, from 2008 to 2010, still they call Zencoder Startup???

        April 14, 2009
“After a successful public Beta, we’re very excited to release Flix Cloud,” said Frank Galligan, General Manager, Applications, and VP of Engineering for On2. “The explosion in digital video content is increasing the complexity of encoding. Customers need to convert whole libraries of content to Flash, HD, and mobile formats at once, while keeping operational costs low. As a highly scalable, virtual service, Flix Cloud uniquely responds to these market needs.”

Zencoder’s founders actually originally developed the cloud encoding technology behind Flix Cloud, that was used by video compression startup On2 technologies. Flix Cloud combined Zencoder’s cloud encoding software with On2′s Flix Engine encoder, putting Flix Engine in the cloud. When Google acquired video compression technology company On2 for $106 million last year, the search giant also got encoding SaaS Flix Cloud as part of the deal. Now it looks like Google is shuttering Flix Cloud in November (and will stop accepting new customers as of tomorrow), and encouraging users to move to newly launching encoding startup Zencoder, which we previously wrote about here.
