    • I am the REAL DEAL and I am offended by the batch of garbage written by an IDIOT for an IDIOT that you post on a daily basis both here and on the CVS board! If you can't do any better than that please refrain from posting ANYTHING, especially anything YOU consider clever or witty because YOU ARE NEITHER! If you must persist in posting then stick to a disclaimer at the end that says "I am a worthless, unemployed hump who has nothing to do all day except post nonsensical trash to clutter up the message board and I neither own Walgreen stock nor work for the Walgreen Company and I am NOT a highly educated person like a pharmacist, but only possess an eighth grade education". That way everyone will know that you have no affiliation with such a GREAT COMPANY like Walgreens and are just a pathetic, meaningless troll looking for some attention.

    • Most interesting to me was the affirmation of what I suspected: WAG bouhgt back approx. $1 Billion in shares in the last 2 months of Q4. That's 35 million shares. My guess is that this loading of repurchase shares was done when the projected numbers did not look all so promising.

There is nothing illegal about doing this. But it does look somewhat suspicious that NO shares were repurchased in the month of June.

What the math looks like to me is that around 3 points of the "beat" came from the repurchase. Like all the buy-forward schemes... flu shot gift cards, "get it before you get it" campaigns... the actual operating results become blurry and harder to predict, going forward.

      JMHO.

Oh Yank, I love giving you accounting beat downs! OK, let's look at what you wrote:

<<What the math looks like to me is that around 3 points of the "beat" came from the repurchase.>>

You posted this previously under a different ID.

Q: How can a stock repurchase lead to better numbers?
A:It cannot. The accounting entry is Debit to Treasury Stock - an asset, and a credit to cash.

I'm listing a help guide for you here:

        http://www.cliffsnotes.com/study_guide/Accounting-for-Stock-Transactions.topicArticleId-21248,articleId-21193.html

See the section entited "Treasury Stock". Now, you will note that this makes LESS cash available, not more. Also, it has NO effect on revenues or profits - NONE.

This journal of accountancy article might help you (but I doubt it):

Think about it - If I ran WAG, and folks gave me money and did not redeem the gift card, wouldn't that HELP me?

Sheesh, Yank, sometimes I am really surprised by your lack of common sense.

Yank, it's only smoke and mirrors if you don't understand it.

    • What a cabal of fools.

So, ivan YOU answer for the MIA "runs". What did WAG investors get for the accelerated $2 Billion buy back?

They got a higher share price because around 3% of the shares were retired, inflating earnings per share by that same amount. Why is it SO hard for you pumpers to just admit the obvious truth?

The Q4 results were kited by the heavily weighted share repurchase. Period. End of quote. WAG's 10K PROVES IT!

      Tata!

      Yank

I am not MIA, although LeBron is the King, and he plays for MIA. But I digress.....

I'll take a stab at your question -

They get a company that spends their money wisely. First, they buy DR for cash (what a huge coup!) and then they invest in the best in class (and why shouldn't they?) - buying WAG stock!

      There's a way - Walgreens.
