Seriously! I think this may explain a lot about why Walgreens bought DSCM. Maybe $400+M wasn't overpaying when mailorder might prove much less costly, over the long run, with these HUGE settlements that juries seem inclined to mete out.
To put the opportunity in focus, Walgreens paid $1.1 Billion for 250 Duane Reade stores and a warehouse or two. IMHO, you could alternatively spend around $20 million on an automated Central fill facility staffed by a dozen pharmacists that check off and counsel by phone. And robots that count, bottle and label all prescriptions, eliminating all the unneeded Techs. Keep 5 stores per borough, 25 stores/70 or fewer pharmacists that merely counsel at the time of customer Rx pickup. You'd save a fortune. All you give up is the convenience sale of chocolate chip cookies, condoms and beer in the more localized, additional stores.
Sounds like a great trade off to me! And, just think, no more lawsuits over misfills with $20-30 million settlements and gobs of bad press!
Why, with Central fill and automation, 7,000 stores could scale back to 700 stores and never miss a beat. Lots of mailorder, lots of 90-day prescriptions and lots and lots of newly out-of-work pharmacists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
