Keep stock low key
Does anyone out there know how many stores Walgreen's is going to open in Califonia next year. I heard it to be about 400 stores.

They will be opening about 365 stores each year, across the country, about one per day.

At one time, I spent alot of money at walgreen's.
Over the years,I've stopped going there altogether.
Here in S.F., they've expanded so much you can almost
throw a rock between them. They charge $4.65 for a pack
of cigarettes, which you can get for $3.50 at nearby
locations. I'm not advocating smoking, but I always make
other purchases when I buy cigarettes. Other people I
talk to are upset over this. I can get drugs
considerably cheaper at online drugstores.
I have no
position in wag, but may buy in again if it pulls back
considerably. I think it's a wonderful company, however, I
think they are making alot of mistakes.

They will be opening around 70 stores in Calf in 1999, around 350 total around the country and P.R.

I am an ex-WAG 10 year employee who moved to San Diego.
This area needs some competition. Any plans for stores here or more stores in nearby Orange County? -
There are alot of places WAG is not...not many
out west, columbus OH has none i believe...they will
kick ass where ever they go...friends in Las Vegas
love their stores that are only 2 years
old.

I work for Walgreens, and their goal for a few years, as been
3000 stores by 2000, well this week, at the annual stick holders meeting, it was announced, that they are shooting for 6000 stores by 2010 - we currently have about 2348 stores, and are planning on opening about 300 stores a year...- 1 Reply to Thomasj876

good you can takeover the whole damn drugstore business and be the walmart of drugs-just dont fuck up profit growth, because at 38 x wag is expensive--but it has the best mgmt in the industry. Keep climbing baby ride em high

Walgreens is one of the best stocks I own. Have about l50% profit since March of '95. Fine, supurbly managed company. Steady earnings increase and new store openings are agressive and on schedule. Their expansion plans will continue to result in greater earnings.

What is the address to get enrollment information? I am very interested in Walgreen's. Do they also send a prospectus along with the enrollment information?

I work for Walgreens and we plan to open almost 300 stores in different parts of the country in '98. They will not all be in California. They are in some new markets as well as established.

Yesterday I received enrollment information on the WAG DRIP. Here is the summary:
New Account fee: $10.00
Purchases:
Automatic debit: $1.50 + $.10 per share
Not automatic debit: $5.00 + $.10 per share
Dividend reinvestments have no fees. The minimum investment is $50. -
In the WAG anual report they said it was unlikly they would make any major purchases . To quote the company presedent, Dan Jorndt, from the anual report when they are discussing growth
" "Our approach differs from our major competitors," he adds. "Most notably, we are not participating in the acquisition feeding frenzy which has gripped our industry. As Finanical World noted, 'There's as much chance of Walgreen making a major acquisition as there is of Dennis Rodman joining a monastery.' We Agree." "
The 'not' in the above quote was emphasised. Since Thrifty would probably be considered a major acquisition I think it is unlikly they will buy it. Unless they are being deceptive in the anual report and I doubt that very much.
Was the store manager talking a WAG manager or a Thrifty manager?
P. S. I think Dennis Rodman would be helped by some time in a monastery. -
Walgreens is opening Free Standing locations as their mode of operation. Thrifty is basically traditional with old out moded stores.
