    Earnings Question

How can this company come out and lower their earnings guidance on March 2nd (13-14c/share)and then blow through their numbers on May 3rd (21c)? Is their business that volatile? If so, how the can they give full year estimates with any confidence?

    • (1) On March 1, the company reported the earning for fourth quarter 2003, it said: "Macrovision also announced initial guidance for fiscal year 2004. The Company anticipates revenues of $145M-$150M for 2004, with pro forma EPS of $0.78-$0.80 for the year. Revenues for the first quarter of 2004 are expected to be in the $31M-$32M range, with pro forma EPS of $0.13-$0.14."
(2)Yesterday, it reported: this quarter "Macrovision posted a net profit of $10.8 million, or 21 cents per share, compared to a year-earlier profit of $6.9 million, or 14 cents per share. Revenue rose to $38 million from $28.1 million a year earlier."
and "For the second quarter the company forecast earnings per share excluding items of 17 cents to 18 cents, and for the year it forecast EPS on the same basis of 85 cents to 87 cents."
Comments: The company gave guidance much lower, then beat it. However if you deducted the 10c extra gain in first quarter. The remained three quarters have same earning quidance:64c to 66c. That means the first quarter results can't be sustainable in the following quarters. Such earning number play will damage the credits of the managers.

they obviously got some huge deals moved up which were allowed to be booked in Q1 I guess you do not understand revenue recognition do you? look at how software deals have to be structured and recognized..ALSO I BELIEVE THAT THE FOX DEAL WHICH PROBABLY IS A MASSIVE DEAL WAS ANNOUNCED AFTER THE LAST QUARTER AND WAS PROBABLY UNEXPECTED TO THIS YEAR.....do the math fool!

it means that a deal got moved up by quite a bit ...there was no earnings play moron obviously in the last month of the quarter the company received a massive deal that they did not anticipate getting...

you ever heard of a company missing earnings by a huge amount because a big deal feel through? well this is the converse of that situation a big deal not anticipated obviously came through bigtime.....there is no credibility lost here only gained just shows how conservative the company is which means that the numbers they put forth for the year are low balled tooo.....

      • You should report this to SEC right now!
Are you short? We know this symptom very well!

      • Even trading today was a scam operation by MM's and the fund that upgraded MVSN..\\\

This scam will be exposed tomorrow.

    • Have you done dd on this stock?
It was undervalued and the 30% rise still does not reflect the true value of this stock, it should be trading $26- $30 at the least!

      Stampha

ps congrats, to all longs, great day and I think many more to come!

    • Candor2001us is a moron!!!

    • You have one problem and that is that you "love" this stock. Are you familiar with the gaps usually get filled concept? You keep quoting targets and the future and that isn't tomorrow. Stocks don't move purely on fundamentals - as was proven today...

    • This is normal protocol for dichead(Candor2001us. He recommended strong buy from 2000 all the way down to 2003 lows. He is a moronic asshole

    • "Now that was funny - ridiculously undervalued? "

which part was funny? I do not recall trying to add any levity to idiots who even try to imply this stock is overvalued because that would be laughed at in any business finance course even taught in high school.......again the numbers

a company should trade at twice their growth rate in a normal economy with slight inflation...

macrovision growing at more than 20 percent their P/e is only 27.......that is a joke and ridiculously cheap...growth company with a huge patent interference still looming .....that could up in upwards of 500 million deal....perhaps even more.....

the company has always been very conservative and their forecasts have been typically dead on except they usually beat it by only a penny...there are a myriad of reasons for EPS changing dramatically...how about changing deal types from annual to perpetual in a licensing model? or how about dramatically shortening a sales cycle shifting it down by a quarter or so? no there business is not that volatile......well chances are their full year estimates are on the low conservative side.....which means they could have an even more phenomenal year than anticipated.....let's see microsoft paid 440 million to intertrust to license their patents...how much is macrovision going to get if they win the patent inteference against intertrust 400- 500 million? this stock is very cheap right now......

    • Now that was funny - ridiculously undervalued? Keep em coming - you're killing me. Maybe it will be up another 30% tomorrow, and another 30% the next day. All good stocks do that - signs of "healthy" growth. ;)

    • "Forget the predictions... the stock is not worth $22.75 plain and simple"

dude you're right it is worth far more trading at only 25 times this years earnings raised guidance top line growing over 20 percent this year no inflation...you're right this stock is ridiculously undervalued

    • Forget the predictions... the stock is not worth $22.75 plain and simple. We are shorting this stock because we know that.
