Shares of interactive television program guide developer Rovi (ROVI) are up 82 cents, over 5%, at $16.67, after the company this evening announced it will pursue a sale of its “Rovi Entertainment Store” business in order to focus on “core enabling technologies and services.”
Last quarter, I told you we had put the Rovi Entertainment Store into its own business unit in order to align priorities.. putting them into an operating unit and actually getting more stores rolled out, onto devices, the timeliness in going for the announcement of Toys "R" Us to get it launched. Great progress there, but we continue to monitor that business closely.
We are looking to take advantage of the position we play in terms of supporting initiatives, such as Ultraviolet and ensure their economics make it worthwhile for us to participate.
we still see very strong demand, a lot of what we've been focused on is trying to optimize the business. And then, we'll just continue to watch it closely. But right now, it's kind of heading down trying to run the business
Rovi has been called upon to provide its Rovi Entertainment Store solution, which includes white-label storefronts and playback client SDKs, as well as its adaptive video streaming format DivX Plus Streaming, content licensing, management, and marketing services.
With retail operations spanning over 1,300 stores in 28 countries, Dixons Retail has considerable reach and could be using the UK launch of KnowHow Movies to prepare for the eventual rollout of a pan-European video service.
there's a massive untapped userbase out there in the UK to target.
"We'll look to do that by offering £5 - £10 giftcards for the service, to get the customer to try it. And once they've tried it, they'll be on board.
Niall O'Keefe, Knowhow development director, told us that Currys and PC World was in a unique position to do this as it also sells the equipment needed to host the service. "We sell four-and-a-half million plus devices a year," he revealed. "We touch 19 million customers a year. We have five million customers come through the doors or on the internet on a weekly basis. So we've got big expectations. We've got a massive reach.
"It's on our own branded PCs already," said Kearns. "And on numerous other branded PCs, we have the link already on the desktop quite prominently. "We're at the stage where over half of the PCs we sell will come with [Knowhow Movies] pre-loaded. That will grow as time goes by. And then we'll move through the different devices. You'll either see it pre-installed, pushed down via a software update or available on that device's app stor.."
