    Ultraviolet downloads

Coming about a year after its launch on iOS, Walmart-owned Vudu has opened up access to its (UltraViolet-connected) movie library on Android. Interestingly, it's included a key feature not currently available in the iPad and iPhone Vudu Player app: users can download videos for offline viewing just like they do on PCs, not just streaming over WiFi in the browser.

Vudu also notes in the press release that as of last month, its Xbox 360 app has been updated to support 1080p HDX streaming video. Do you really need another reason to give it a shot? If so, try this one on -- all new users who activate an UltraViolet account between now and March get 10 free movies.. between Vudu and Flixster offers you should be able to snag a bunch of free flicks watchable anywhere on your Android device without spending a cent (or hunting through torrents and the like, your choice).

    • The launch of the first at-home disc-to-digital service could prove a major boon for UltraViolet, the buy once, play anywhere cloud-based digital movie service the home entertainment industry launched in October 2011. Currently there are more than 7 million household UltraViolet accounts.

Similar to the in-store disc-to-digital program launched by Walmart in April, CinemaNow disc-to-digital DVD owners can pay $2 to unlock a standard-definition version of a film, or $5 to upgrade the content to high definition. Rovi Corp. is providing the technology that enables the CinemaNow disc-to-digital service.

The CinemaNow player offers both streaming and download options, as well as a direct link to CinemaNow to buy or rent content.

The CinemaNow service, which is powered by technology from Rovi, is certainly an improvement over the in-store disc-to-digital service that Wal-Mart has been offering for about a year.. what CinemaNow's new service enables is pretty compelling: the ability to watch movies from your collection wherever you may be, whenever you want, with no need to cart around the DVDs. Ultraviolet also solves the potential compatibility issues faced by digital files -- there are UV apps for all the major software platforms, and those apps can play any UV streams or downloads. And the fact that it's based in the cloud means that it backs up customers' movies in addition to making them remotely accessible.
