    Telling Advertisements

I was struck by the Rosetta Stone advertisement where a gentlemen who recounts that he was a "dismal failure" in a formal educational setting, but he tried Rosetta Stone and "it was kinda fun". So, Rosetta Stone made failure fun? Other commercials are designed to imply some sort of meaningful communicative ability, but you quickly realize all they are claiming is to have learned a phrase or two. What does it mean, legally, to say that you can "spoke Japanese to your parents"? It means you regurgitated a memorized phrase. I find the attempt to imply even basic fluency troubling; but to the company's credit they effectively claim NOTHING with respect to actual results. I hardly think this product is more effective than a free online language training site and a book or two.

    • have to disagree, to a point.

IF you you RS "the right way" it is very effective. BUT, they dont tell you how to get the most out of it. Thats their whole problem, always has been always will be.

Will you become fluent using only RS. No.
Will RS teach you everything. No.

RS is just another tool in your toolbox to help you learn a language

Most of the problem with RS as a company is that those who do the marketing & sales NEVER learned a 2nd language. Most at the company DONT have any experience with a 2nd language or ANY worthwhile overseas experience.

      Sad.

If they would just put those in power who know what learning a language is really like, you would see much better & more effective ads.

All they care about is selling yellow boxes & thats all they see it all as.

      Such a waste of potential
