    NGK sodium-sulfur battery

The value of NaS ESS has to be very high to beat the fears of any future customer!
Will the cheaper ALTI-ESS made in china beat NaS battery only based on risk evaluation?

"Xcel Energy is preparing to re-start a 1MW wind energy battery storage project in Minnesota that was shut down 15 months ago because of a possible fire risk.

“We anticipate that we will bring the battery back on-line in February,” an Xcel spokesperson told reNews.

In 2008 the energy outfit installed the $4.3m research scheme at an 11MW wind farm by Minwind Energy near Luverne. Xcel Energy bought a sodium-sulfur battery from NGK Insulators of Japan.

NGK contacted customers after a fire broke out at the Mitsubishi Materials’ Tsukuba plant in Japan in September 2011.

“NGK recommended that we shut down the battery due to the potential for a short circuit,” said Xcel.

The manufacturer later determined that a single battery cell was faulty and leaked hot molten material. NGK replaced the modules in the Xcel battery system with redesigned modules.

The installation was completed in November 2012 and Xcel continues to fine-tune communications at the site. Battery storage operations are expected to resume shortly."

    Sentiment: Buy

This is a very good question in a way that may be answered by coming conclusion who will win the remaining 4MW ESS contract for China's largest renewable integration in Zhangbei city of Hebei Province. NaS battery was a favorite originally, but has been losing support in China due to the safety concern on the fire accident in Japan 2011. Phase 1 of the pilot project, using BYD and CALB's lithium-ion battery, has been running fairly well, though BYD's ESS pilot project in Southern Grid of China was reported having more than 20 times smoking incidents. The government officials repeatedly said it would focus on safety and long cycle life for the energy storage systems. Hopefully, ALTI-ESS gets the deal that could help ALTI become an elite player in China's ESS market overnight.
