This triggers stop losses which they scoop up on the cheap - actually buying the shares for their own accounts but they never put any real money into driving the stock down with the fake 100 share trades. When the time comes for buyers to step in, the MM's reverse the process and start jacking the price UP making a killing on the cheap shares they stole earlier. Get the picture? Pretty sweet game - perfectly legal thievery.
