Regardless of how it impacts BP -- which I suppose will be not at all -- I think HAL's criminal plea deal also required it to pay $55M to some worthy cause, in addition to that $200K fine (which I understand was the maximum allowed under the statute that HAL was charged with violating).
I love this. BP is pretty straight, accepts responsibility and is hit with tens of billions of costs. Halliburton, has a flunky manager destroy the data, pays a $200 K fine, and, so far, gets away with almost no costs. Hmmm, tells me that if you co-operate you get killed.
