SONICblue, Inc. (SBLUQ) Message Board

  • of funding
totaling $50 million that includes significant
    investments
from a leading content provider, consumer electronic
    device manufacturers and
    technology
    companies.

This third round of funding includes investments from
    Universal Music Group (The
    Seagram Company Ltd.,
    NYSE:VO), Toshiba Corporation, Samsung Electronics
    Co.
    Ltd., S3 Incorporated (Nasdaq:SIII), Imation
    Corporation (NYSE:IMN) and others.
    The strong interest
from these companies signals clear industry confidence
    in
the DataPlay disc and micro-optical engine, as well
    as DataPlay's
    ContentKey(TM)
    technology.

"Consumers demand a carrier for their music and other
    content that is
affordable, easy to use, stylish and
versatile, and the DataPlay disc will
    provide all of that
and more," said Larry Kenswil, President of eLabs,
    Universal
Music Group. "Because we are the largest music company
    in the world, our artists
    look to us to provide
carriers that persistently and profitably protect
    their
music while helping them and their fans navigate
    further into the digital age.
    The DataPlay disc is a
win for fans, artists and music companies."

    An
affordable, miniature optical media about the size of a
    quarter, the DataPlay
    disc can contain pre-recorded and
    user-recorded content. DataPlay expects that
    its
micro-optical engine will be incorporated into a variety of
    consumer
electronic devices such as digital music players, electronic
    books, portable
    games, digital cameras and
Web-enabled portable phones. DataPlay has also
    developed
    ContentKey(TM), a content enabling e-commerce tool that
    allows
consumers to activate pre-recorded content on a DataPlay
    disc over the Internet
    without necessitating a
    download.

"DataPlay presents an exciting opportunity for
    manufacturers to develop the next
    generation of consumer
electronics," said Eric Kim, senior vice president of
    global
marketing operations for Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd.
    "Because of
its portability, DataPlay will enable us to
create devices that people can use
    to download
content from the Internet, playback music, display
    photographs or
view other data at home or on the
    run."

"The DataPlay disc creates a truly universal medium,"
    said Tetsuya Mizoguchi,
    president and CEO of
Toshiba's Digital Media Network Company. "This
    versatility
offers Toshiba an opportunity to develop a wide range of
    products to meet the
    growing consumer demand for
portable, recordable and permanent digital media."
