Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack Message Board

    Auto Parts Industry

No hype here - just plain talk. I agree about the negative effect that the flood of new car sales will have on service centers. Even as a manager in the 80's & 90's, I knew that the service center was not the cash cow that upper management claimed it was. I knew that after you subtracted mechanic's pay, returns/refunds, claims, etc., that very little was left on the bottom line. I'm quite sure that things have gotten worse since then, after reading all the posts here. These cars, however, will still need wipers, filters, accessories, etc. going forward. Who has better prices on parts, AZO, PBY, CAO or ? I worked for PBY for 16 years, AZO for 4 years. I already know the answer. PBY needs to be competitive on parts pricing. Also, it was my experience that 90% of customer complaints at PBY came from the service side. At AZO, I received very few complaints, and they were very simple to resolve.

    • All valid points but I dont think its possible to support a 21,000 square foot building selling wipers, filters and accessories because the occupancy costs are just too high. It just may be that there is no solution for Pep Boys.

Barington cant force the board to do anything even if they get the support of other shareholders. But it is about time someone put Larry under the spot light and held him accountable just like the commoners slaving away in the stores. The next earnings conference call should be interesting if someone from Barington is there to ask some real questions.
But if past performance is any indication of future results Pep Boys criminal board of directors will wait until they sign a new three year deal with Larry Stevenson before they make any changes so the shareholders can give him an additional fifteen million dollars to go away, just like they did with Mitch.
