Thank you - I still haven't heard back from SPLS Investor Relations. Maybe they don't return calls, eh?
The lesson I learned from this episode is that I need to get my records in order. If this stock keeps dropping I might have to bail out & then I will need to know when I bought & for how much next April for the Schedule D. I hope it will be a substantial long term gain.
I hope it reverses direction and goes back up so they can split again next year.
Nope, the first divendend EVER was last April. It was initiated (as stated by someone else) to (1) take advantage of the new tax laws where dividends are taxed at same rate as capital gains and (2) as recognition that Staples was no longer a "pure" growth company, but rather a mature business (but still growing).
I checked my records, found out that I bought SPLS in 1995, moved it out of 1 broker account to online broker in 12/2000. I found no records of dividend payments through 4/30/2001, which is into George W. Bush's 1st term.
Waiting to hear from SPLS Investor Relations to find out when they started paying dividends.
Just an aside comment: One of the SPLS board members was primarily responsible for squelching the capital gains tax reductions desired by Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Do you know who that was?
True. However, I think that Staples has been offering the dividend well before Bush though. I've been in and out of this stock since 1997, and I'm pretty sure the dividend has been around since then. hehehe . . . of course, it's early and I haven't had any caffine yet, so my brain is asleep at the moment. :)
