We understood that Samsung and LG were even talking about cross-licensing and had agreed to stop this non-productive fighting over patents. What might be the significance of this police investigation? Does anyone know the laws that apply to this kind of thing in South Korea?
It just means they're negotiating. Remember when Samsung & UDC were negotiating a licensing deal and all those stories came out. Same thing here.
The detailed negotiations on pricing started yesterday. On the same day the police raided Samsung offices. Also the Korea Times came out with an article basically stating LG's negotiating position.
LG is the leader in OLED TVs. We're first. We're ahead of Samsung. We can make them in 4K resolution, too. Samsung wants to license our WRGB technology. Oh, and we're coming out with a flexible OLED this year, too. Ahead of Samsung.
Translation, LG to Samsung: Your flexible patents aren't worth that much to us but you need to pay up for our WRGB patents. And, by the way, we'll make that police investigation thing go away too.
Look for more of the same from both companies until one day shortly you see the headline: LG and Samsung reach cross licensing deal.
