Universal Display Corp. Message Board

In the next week or two, we will be hearing that Samsung sales of the S4 are on a rampage. The media will use this as a way to beat down Apple as having lost their creativity. There will be much conversation about the screen (see the Forbes article........just google it). There will be much conversation about the depth of colors, especially green. There will be much conversation about 25% battery improvement. There might even be mention of Universal Display ............. NOW WOULD BE A GREAT TIME for Universal Display to have a great public relations firm that would tell the story of OLED to consumers. Of course, they are doing this to the institutional investor world but it would really drive the stock if this story was told in all kinds of niche market magazines that had nothing to do with the stock market...........everyone who reads these magazines invests money. THOUGHTS?

    • The best marketing UDC can do on the cheap is in EVERY LONG TERM CONTRACT they must require that the external packaging list "licensed by Universal Display OLED Technology" or "OLED Technology licensed by Universal Display". I pray every night that someone at the ASM ask management if they have considered that for all future LT Contracts. So they can build a visible retail profile brand identity (Intel inside).

      Sentiment: Strong Buy

    • Why do you think that public relations is the problem with PANL?

The reason that PANL has had a terrible year is that revenue expectations fell precipitously over the last year. In the spring of 2012, analysts were expecting $100 million in revenue in 2012 and $160 million in 2013. Now we are at $117 million for 2013.

Turn that around and the stock price will fix matter what they do on the public relations front.

      • PANL does have a problem with it's investor relations - the reason the stock was hit last year was the weak financial performance, but the reason it was hit as hard as it was was the lack of good messaging from the company to investors. Everyone was shocked when green adoption was delayed by basically 9 months. If this had been properly communicated to investors you would not have had so many longs just walking away. I don't really fault management for this, rather I fault the lack of an in house IR team - they used an outsourced company to do IR. Getting a good internal IR team would cost money and clearly with their long-term view management finds that to be somewhat irrelevant - but last fall cost them credibility. Thankfully their lowball conservative guidance this year should restore the faith, and with flexible coming and TV ramp in early 2014 there are plenty of catalysts to move the stock. So I don't think consumer PR is the problem, that would be a waste of money since they can count on their clients to market OLED - but the lack of in-house IR is an issue they should correct.

      • Slacker, you remind me of the hedge fund guy who once told me that if he puts up good results people will find him. Obviously, nobody beat a path to his door as others were out promoting their wares. Same thing here.

PANL has a small float and a small number of shareholders. Very small retail holdings. While we know all about it, the world knows nothing.

Now, imagine a world where there were articles appearing that told the OLED story in full bloom and people got to know that OLED = PANL. Imagine the phone calls from guys who read Science Today to their brokers (if they have brokers) and the stock getting into retail hands from guys who buy and sell using the likes of Fidelity.

Part of the problem with PANL is that the shorts can borrow the stock in large quanitity from the funds........that's been discussed at length here. One of the things a healthy business needs is a large spread of clients.

I can go on and on about this but in the world of this business, the cost of a good publicity campaign is di minimus and the outcome could be great.............and remember, if a company gets hot the way this one can, all kinds of good things can happen
