Very interesting topic about Sony and Panasonic OLED collaboration

Posted on June 22, 2012 by Adam Westlake in Business, Tech & Science

Sony, Panasonic OLED TV co-development to be announced next week
Two separate sources have revealed to Reuters that Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp., two of Japan’s largest electronics manufacturing rivals, will make their announcement next week about co-developing organic light emitting diode (OLED) TVs. As the two companies have both struggled to revive their sinking TV divisions from weak sales and fierce competition from South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, they hope to work together not only to produce the next generation of television technology, but also to keep costs down and make it affordable for consumers.

Prior to working together, Sony went in the direction of exploring the use of sprays to create artificial screens. Meanwhile Panasonic has spent nearly 30 billion yen (approx. $374 million) in building a plant to test production of prototype OLED screens built with technology from inkjet printers. A co-development announcement of this size would be the first of the two Japanese electronics giants working together.
