$100,000 increase and an increase in options, why? He has not done anything but run MRK into the ground. MRK is one of the worst performing big pharmas. I think he should be run out of the company not rewarded, the board of directors must be one of those lame never do anything weak type of board directors. The CEO has to go!
sadly, this is the norm throughout industry, look at enron, polaroid, kmart, global crossing, etc. Being a CEO CFO, etc. makes you the member of a special club who are cozy with BOD's. Let's face it, once you have one of these positions it is a guaranteed get rich job, no matter how well you perform. Thus it is a form of welfare. Performance only determines hoe rich you get, at the expense of lower level employees who may have done very well at their FORMER jobs. The only way to end this is to have more investors (institutional etc. since everyone on this board is small change) and force a board seat as some have done.
