    AEP Merger Talk

    By Dan Gearino

A trade publication is reporting that American Electric Power is in preliminary merger talks with Entergy Corp., a Louisiana-based utility.

AEP and Entergy had no comment this morning.

The Energy Daily cites unnamed sources who say that the two companies are in the early stages of merger talks, though the sources say a deal is not imminent.

The report arrives at a time of consolidation among electric utilities. Duke Energy, which serves parts of Ohio, has announced plans to merge with Progress Energy; both companies are based in North Carolina. Exelon Corp. of Illinois is seeking approval to acquire Constellation Energy of Maryland.

Columbus-based AEP is one of the largest electric utilities in the country, with 5 million customers in 11 states. Entergy has 2.7 million customers in four states, and is the nation's second-largest generator of nuclear power. The two companies each have service territories in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
