Italy was the first entry into this sector for Capstone. When micro turbines are used for power and as a heat exchanger system the efficacy runs near 90%. That will be a compelling advantage for the Plants able to design in micro turbines. Capstone is working out their first design for the dual use in their first Food Manufacturing site.
There are many food and beverage processing establishments (plants) in the U.S.—almost 30,000 owned by about 24,500 companies in 2007
From the study "Energy Efficiency and Management in Food Processing Facilities" page 87.
"In the food industry, about 57% of fossil fuel consumption is to generate steam. The steam is used to provide space heat and process heat for cooking, concentration liquid food, drying and sterilizing…"
The results coming out of this latest contract in Italy is going to be very interesting. If successful it could get a very big ball running as Food Manufacturing sites adopt the new cost saving application.
