Gannett earnings today came in a bit lower than many expected. Revenue for Q4 not really strong. Of course it is more than twice the size of NYT, but the trend was weak. And remember that is for a quarter where GDP shot up 5.7%, higher than most expected. Why didn't advertising do better? Is NYT ahead of itself or ahead of its earnings? Some caution is indicated.
The economy is not turning around like the bulls thought it would. Advertising dollars are not going to improve, but probably continue to trend downward.
Perfect storms brewing. Number of ads dropping, corporate advertising continues to migrate to the net, the new pay model should reduce readership/circulation, which in turn will exacerbate the advertising rates and future revenue.
The big fat debt this dog with fleas has isn't going away.
