I do check google news (where I click on Times articles), but I also wake up to the Times, check it throughout the day on my phone, email its articles to colleagues, family, and friends…I go to bed after checking the Times-- couldn't do that w/the print version... I would pay much more to have this resource... I pay for Tivo, I pay for Netflix.... I pay gladly for the Times
Exactly. That's what people who are bearish on this stock don't understand: While print may be a dying media, people will always be willing to pay for INFORMATIVE JOURNALISM from a reputable source. A lot of local and regional papers will most likely die out as a result of consumers switching from print to e-readers/online, but a company like the NYT with its strong name brand (has the third most amount of daily subscribers, and most for the Sunday edition of all the national papers) will always have an audience willing to pay for it.
The New York Times is anything but a "reputable" source. There are tons of news sources out there on the Web for free. Some reputable, some not like the New York Times. The point is that the Times will have to compete while charging for their digital news. I am willing to bet that they will continue to slowly sink into the oblivion where they belong in the coming years.
