So OfficeMax continues to post HUGE losses each quarter---- while Staples is posting HUGE profits and on is on target--- and Staples is set to open many more stores....
So is everyone here thinking that Staples is gonna buy OfficeMax?
Of all the stocks to go up today--- this one really seems the least likely to go up... do you really think that the board will get rid of the poison pills --etc??? And sell for a good price?
An acquisition would certainly be distracting to Staples and Office Depot. I don't think Staples would want the distraction since they have a proven model and are going to grow profitably on their own. Staples' goal is to be a a $30 billion dollar company by 2010 and have a plan to get there.
Office Depot is having a hard time executing their own situations, so don't see them doing anything dramatic.
Whether or not the gov't would approve a merger is mere speculation at this point. A better question imho is, how much is OMX worth in a buyout? I don't think SPLS or ODP needs to bail them out, anyway. OMX retail is worth nothing and they can afford to sit and wait til the implosion to go in and undercut the contracts. What value does OMX hold for either company?
you are correct ....the FTC is not the same regime as when Staples and Office Depot attempted the merger. whole different viewpoint now and we are witnessing mergers and acquisitions everyday that are much more sensitive then pens and pencils!!!!!
Unreal. No f'ing way antitrust applies here. You think Staples is going to corner the office supplies market if they buy OMX?? Ever heard of walmart, Sams club, Costco target, kmart, best buy, circuit city (to name a few), all carry office supplies. OMX IS A GOD DAM DISTRIBUTOR. You think bic pens are going to go up 50% once Staples aquires OMX? Because you can't find them anywhere else.
So you have heard of antitrust now go figure out what it means and when it is applied.
