Don't Write Off the Office-Supply Sector

Credit Suisse analyst -- Gary Balter writes "However, we believe the large sellers have exited Office Depot and OfficeMax in particular, making the risk-reward very compelling, even in a mild recession that is priced into shares."
I have great respect for Gary Balter but OMX??
In any case anyone who believes this article should be buying OP stocks. I am going to think about buying some tomorrow. Balter understands the industry and should be taken seriously.

    • Well I guess everyone has written off OMX in the office supply sector! Very quiet lately. And not just on this board.....

    • Not ODP

    • I love it. Headlines all week read 'Don't write off the office-supply sector'. Meanwhile everyone's stock is going down, down, down..........................

    • Very good assessment. However, I thought this was an OMX finance board? What happened to all the rumors about OMX being acquired and all the problems they are facing? I hear the employee morale is at an all time low and that the service has hit rock bottom. Maybe CorpEx buys them and goes back to the B2B model that made Boise a force to be reckoned with? Any thoughts?

    • So basically he's just saying that it's not time for another merger in the industry. While the stockholders would like to see Corporate Express sold, the company figures they can revamp management, cut costs, post some decent numbers (if that is possible), wait for the economy to turn, and then sell? Let the retailers struggle in the meantime since that is directly fused to the US economy and the Bush recession?...... "As well, based on recent meetings with Corporate Express U.S. management, we believe President Jay Mutschler and his team are stabilizing the business and appear on the right track to begin taking share in 2008. That presents an incremental headwind to Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax."

That is all we needed to hear. Never believe anything Jay has to say!

      • Well - in one sentence you told us you are a disgruntled employee and a Bush hater. (Let the retailers struggle in the meantime since that is directly fused to the US economy and the Bush recession?...... )I don't recall anything in the article discussing Bush or the economy. As a matter of fact I checked my stock portfolio last night and I seem to be at record highs not in a recession.
And it is a minority group of stockholders that want to see the stock sold (CXP).
So I guess that it is safe to say that you will not be placing a buy order for OMX, ODP or SPLS today or any day.
