We will see what could have been when they report how many Lumia phones they sold in the next two quarter. IMO AS OF RIGHT NOW ELOP ELOPED WITH LUMIA TO MSFT AND GOT PAID A HUGE ROYALTY TO BOOT. HE ALSO INTENTIONALLY DROVE DOWN SHAREHOLDER VALUE TO DO IT.
The only reason Lumia is viable is because of Microsoft/W8. Had Nokia gone with Android it would have gone toe to toe with Samsung and HTC and other "no-name" phone makers, a race to the bottom, no margins on sales. As it is, Android has a limited future as Android has a limited future. Samsung will go with Tizen, and I don't expect that will go well. I expect in 4-5 years Samsung will be out of smartphones - Apple, Google (chrome) and Microsoft will own mobile.
Look at Samsung's advertising - no mention of Android. Android will be toast in the foreseeable future. Nokia had no choice but to go with Microsoft, and the Nokia Boards of Directors knew this - that's why they hired Elop.
