ARM's next target: The Wintel PC

ARM has got its foot in the door of the Windows franchise with Windows RT and the much talked about Surface PC. Over the next several years as both companies get the kinks out of deploying ARM for Windows, one can expect that Microsoft will start supporting ARM for desktop PCs and laptop. They can follow the same approach as they've followed with RT, keeping the interface identical. It's a win-win. From Microsoft's point of view they can sell their OS to lower cost ARM PCs that will probably sell in high volumes. The only issue is compatibility with legacy apps. If ARM licensees and Microsoft can come up with creative ways to handle this hurdle, this could be a game changing development for Intel. 350 million PCs sell yearly so its a huge market worth investing time and resources on. This exercise will certainly give a much needed architectural boost to the quality of Windows software as it will now have to be designed to support two divergent architectures, something that started with RT.

LOL that is not the only issue ! The fact that the best performing ARM chip has about 1/20 the computing power of the best Intel chip some might consider a bigger issue ;-). My, the Imagination Force is strong here ;-).

Actually, it's closer to 1/10 than 1/20 (according to geekbench)

        Dual A15:
        Integer Processor integer performance 1575
Floating Point Processor floating point performance 3556

        Intel Core i7-3960X 3300 MHz [6 cores]
        Integer Processor integer performance 22481
Floating Point Processor floating point performance 39852

That said, there is no chance of ARM gaining any traction in the windows world.
