LEAP up, reportedly due to speculation of acquisition by DISH
LEAP wireless is a laggard mobile operator with Cricket among brand names. LEAP has 5 million subscribers and a weak balance sheet, however, the company has some wireless device and network experience Ergen can try to leverage.
LEAP is up more than double in afterhours trading due to an offer by AT&T.
I don't see LEAP as being a 'great entry into wireless' entirely. While LEAP could add valuable capabilities to DISH, they are a small scale operation. Let's say a good and leverageable acquisition for DISH.. which now looks like it has slipped away. The price is up past AT&T's offer price. Its possible DISH will make an offer of course.
What are the chances the FCC will allow AT&T to acquire LEAP? Probably good because the two weaker players, T-Mobile and Sprint are in better position. DOJ and FCC will evaluate the acquisition. Its a relatively minor change in the competitive landscape.
