Set the record on Iraq straight!

Who REALLY sold arms to Iraq?

According to SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), from 1973-2002, weapons imported by Iraq came from:

    USSR/Russia: 57%
    France: 13%
    China: 12%
    Czechoslavakia: 7%
    Poland: 4%
    Brazil: 2%
    Egypt: 1%
    Romania: 1%
    Denmark: 1%
    Libya: 1%
    USA: 1%

LETS PUT THIS ONE TO REST RIGHT NOW!
Before and during the conduct of the war in Iraq we all heard from folks who wanted to make sure we knew that it was the United States that armed Saddam Hussein in the first place.

Now the details. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute gathered the information together on arms sales to Iraq from 1973 through 2002. This chart shows the various countries who participated in arming Iraq and the percentage of the Iraqi arms sales business held by each. I found this in the current issue of The Weekly Standard.

Please pay particular attention to the first three entries. The very nations that didn't want to go to war against Iraq were the nations that armed Iraq in the first place..

    • Thank you azureyes. Just when I was starting to think you goose stepped (just kidding). The amount of children that are maimed and killed by land mines is a sorrowful thing.
Do you support the land mines seeburg?

    • Actually, the first was Princess Diana, and it actually is a noble cause...

    • "stuff the libs hate like land mines. "
      ..............................................
who was that Hollywood lib who made land minds a cause celeb? Was it Meryl Streep? Every Hollywooder needs a cause.

    • "stuff the libs hate like land mines. "
So NP, I take it that you are in favor of land mines. You think that they are great and that our free enterprise system should allow them to be manufactured by US companies (of course all of the manufacturing would be done in 3rd world countries for pennies a day).
Is that what you meant with that statement??
      Hmmmm

    • Well, it sounds like we charge too much. Why does anyone buy from us. Seems as though China offers more bang for the buck.

Anyway, as the "greatest nation in the world", I think we should attempt to LESSEN arm sales, not increase them.

I DO hate land mines. But, again, it seems the weapons we sell are the most lethal. Those thousands of SAM's didn't help Iraq very much.

    • Family values, my ass. It's a charade to try and get votes. And it works, thanks to stupid Marrikans and stupid religious Amaaarkans. Not ALWAYS the SAME people.

    • & the ensuing peace dividend atributed to the end of the cold War.... its effect on the economy during the Clinton Years?

If you want "set the record straight" you should show ALL the information and not just the part that is most covenient to make your point.

According to the report you got your figures from Iraq imported weapons up to 1990. This confirms the statement I made before: the USA-Britain murderers invaded a nearly unarmed third world country. The result of this glorious action and "complete military victory" is:
      1. more than 1200 civilians killed (and some in the most horrible way you can imagine); the real figure we will never know from the invaders.
      2. More than 5,000 civilians injured or crippled for life.
      3. Cultural heritage of one of the oldest civilizations on this planet stolen or destroyed
      4. USA labeled as terrorist nation became one of the most hated nations on this planet.
      5. According to almost all economical experts US economy is cripple too and America is facing major recession.

USA government and industry have been providing support and technology to Saddam, but I have no intention to re-open that discussion as many messages have already been posted about that issue.

(I would like to post the link to the SIPRI report, but Yahoo keeps removing it. Use a search engine, such as yahoo! LOL)

      +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'm glad you brought this up. NO. It does NOT "clear" aMAARICA.

NO ONE has said we gave Iraq more weapons than anyone else. During MOST of the 29 years we had NOTHING to do with Iraq. That ALONE lowers the OVERALL % a great deal. After the first so-called gulf "war" until now DURING CLINTON for all those years we sold them NO ARMS at all. I'd like to know the % of arms we sold Iraq during the reaganbushgroup years!! It was during a VERY FEW YEARS when reaganbushg group were in charge that we had our closest ties with Iraq. (BACK WHEN SADDAM WAS AT HIS WORST) During a very short period of time THEN we sold then over $$$ONE BILLION in arms, GAVE them some of their chem-weapons start, DID NOTHING to PREVENT OTHER countries from arming Iraq, GAVE them important intelligence info, that they couldn't have gotten ANYWHERE else in order so they could kill more Iranians and tip the balance to Iraq in that war AND at that very important moment when Iraq ASKED the bush one admin how we felt about Iraq invading Kuwait, we PRETTY MUCH SAID, HAVE AT IT!!! Yes, WE are VERY RESPONSIBLE for bad Saddam!

We are VERY RESPONSIBLE for WORLD WIDE ARMS SALES and the arms RACE WORLD WIDE!!!~ TAKE SOME GD BLAME for christ's sake! When we sold arms to one country, so that OUR BIG CORPORATIONS could profit, OTHER countries sold arms to the ENEMIES of the countries that WE sold arms to, ESCALATING the arms race. When we BUILD AND BUILD more weapons AT THE URGING OF ALL THE US manufacters, it FORCES other countries to do the same.

So, we only sold Iraq 1% of their weapons over a period of 29 years? Yeah, and WORLDIDE we are responsible for the MAJORITY of arms sales, partly by SELLING the arms and MOSTLY be FORCING OTHER countries to arm to keep a balance with those that WE SUPPLY ARMS TO.

      • a couple of points on this topic.....

When adjusted for inflation the % sold by the US drops well below the 1% figure.

Next The U.S. does in fact sell many arms to many countries around the world....(in fact someday the Canadians may have the balls to use some of them but they would need some military forces personel first)

However... can anyone name 1 instance where modern American high tech arms were used by a third party in an offensive manner?.... (OK Iran used F-14s on Iraq but that was after a serious regime change to radical Islamic fundamentalists....so the only example is of Muslims useing American Arms on fellow Muslims)

You can't... because they haven't. They are used solely for defensive purposes. Even the Saudi F-15s used in Gulf I were used in defense of Kuwait.

Israel does not use large quantities of American hardware... they make their own... american hardware used by Israel is used a defense... in fact my opinion is that all Israeli military action against uniformless Palestinians is defensive.... The Iraqi soldiers removing their uniforms is the second thing they have in common with the Palestinians... Homocide bombings being first & foremost.

& to the warm African..... IF the U.S. action to remove Saddam caused the death of 1200 innocent Iraqi civilians in a month, than the death rate of innocent Iraqi's went down in mid march as most estimate that Saddam murdered 500 K a year which is 41 K/month

      • Since the aptly named truthfinder provided FACTS (I know, a foreign concept for you) to back up his claims, please provide FACTS of your own to back up YOUR claim:

        >>>Yeah, and WORLDIDE we are responsible for the MAJORITY of arms sales, partly by SELLING the arms and MOSTLY be FORCING OTHER countries to arm to keep a balance with those that WE SUPPLY ARMS TO. <<<

So, please show EXACTLY the facts that backup your claim that we are responsible for the MAJORITY of arms sales, AND your FACTS that show that we FORCED OTHER countries to arm.

Thanks, I look forward to your reply....
