Bob Evans....Flags NOT at half staff.

With the memorial service underway this afternoon at Ft. Hood, Bob Evans Restaurants were NOT flying the American flag at half staff. This was very upsetting to me and several others in the parking lot. The manager of this restaurant, told me that only federal buildings, courthouses and post offices were ordered to lower their flags. All other establishments in the area were paying their respects by lowering to half staff.

I contacted corporate headquarters to find out why and was told that a corporate decision was made to fly the flag at full staff. Our men and women in the armed forces deserve our respect for simply putting on the uniform. C'mon Bob Evans! Show a little respect.....Especially on a solemn day like today.

      • This particular Bob Evans was located on RT 19 in the Cranberry Twp/Mars Pennsylvania area.

Here is an email that I sent to the Director of Corporate Communications

        (Name Removed),

Yesterday, being a national day of mourning for the military and civilian personnel at Ft. Hood, I could not help but notice that the Bob Evans Restaurant that I had brunch at was NOT flying the American flag at half staff. Every restaurant on rt 19 in the Cranberry Twp/Mars Pennsylvania area was paying their respects on this very solemn occasion. Every restaurant but Bob Evans.

I politely asked the manager if he could do anything about lowering the flag to its appropriate level for the day. At first I though it may have simply been an oversight. He informed me that it was a corporate decision not to fly at half staff because the Presidential Directive only pertained to Federal Courthouses, Post Offices and other government facilities. It surely felt that I was being paid "lip service". I politely said to him that "It was a matter of respect". I met a disabled Vietnam vet in the parking lot who was just returning from an appointment at the VA. We briefly discussed the situation. He said to me...."That just ain't right!"

A few hours later, I contacted Bob Evans Customer Relations to voice my displeasure and was informed that it indeed was a corporate decision to not lower the flag to half staff. If Bob Evans will not fly the American flag at half staff on a nation day of remembrance and mourning, why bother to display the flag at all?

I always thought of Bob Evans Restaurants as Mom, apple pie, baseball and Chevrolets all rolled into one. Not flying the flag at half staff to honor these victims is a disgrace, and reveals to me an underside of the Bob Evans company that I did not want to know about. I, personally, am outraged and incensed that your company would have made a corporate decision and choose not to honor these soldiers in the appropriate manner.

I hope that you will pass my feelings along to the appropriate individuals.
