Anyone move their 401k accounts between cash/stocks/funds?
Last year, I put my 401k into all cash in April near the highs, then put half back in at 1230 on the S&P, then put the other 50% back in at 1140. For a flat year, my 401k as up 11%. If today ends up being a big up day, I am going to all cash again. Even if the market goes higher after testing the double top of 1372, it will definitely at some point go back to 1300 where I will put at least half if not more back in again.
I put all of my 401a, which my employer contributes 6%, into the Vantage Trust PLUS Fund, in March of 2011, to preserve the 22% I made in 2009 & 2010. I started the job on 01/20/2008. I put all new contributions in Inflation Protected Bond Fund (VPTSX)which has returned 11%.
I transfered to the Plus Fund on 03/14/2011, 06/22/2011 and 08/08/2011 then reallocated 100% of new contributions to (VPTSX)on 09/06/2011.
I haven't touched it since then. I am trying to preserve capital.
My cumulative personal rate of return during this period: 28.8% since 01/201/2008
Not bad! I did miss most of the latest rally. I'm only up 1.1% since 09/06/2011 on new contributions.
