The average American woman has fewer than 2.1 children each.
So even if you include families with children, AND assume that BOTH parents are present, you are still at 4 people in the "average" family. However, one third of all families with children present are single-parent families, thus the average size is closer to (.65*4) + (.35*3) = 3.65.
