    solar power never worked in the 1970's

    It didn't work in the 70's for 3 reasons. The first is what you stated, political. That landscape has now changed, worldwide.

    Second was economics. PV cells were cost effective for the Space Program, that was IT. Totally different parity today.

    Third was technology. Even the best cells barely made 3% and much of that energy was lost in the converters to AC. Solar was best at DC applications in the 70's. Todays electronics efficiencies are 40 years improved.
