End to grocery strike may be near

Negotiators in the supermarket strike are very close to a settlement, though one hasnt yet been signed, sources close to the talks said.
An announcement of a deal could come as soon as today, the sources said.
Representatives of the United Food and Commercial Workers union and the supermarkets Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons met last night until 3:30 this morning and talks are continuing now, said John Arnold, a spokesman for federal mediator Peter Hurtgen.
While the sources didnt disclose terms of the proposed deal, they said it is one that union members will be able to live with.
A deal would end a work-stoppage that is in its 137th day. The UFCW launched a strike against Vons on Oct. 11. Ralphs and Albertsons locked out their union members a day later.
The major issues in the dispute are the cost of health care and pensions. Both the employers and the union agree that workers will have to start contributing to the cost of their health coverage, but they had failed to agree on how much workers should pay.
Loooks like sign up bonus, co/pays will stillexist, and new hires that will be hired after radification will fall under another contract. Get ready 2/29/04. This will deifiently be the trend setter for future contracts. I do feel the UFCW has learned a very expensive lesson. This was very expensive for both sides but once the 4th quarter was in the bag the companies had to hold the line.
