    Walmart Sales

Headline says that Walmart sales disappoint as consumers curb spending. Maybe it's because Kroger is kicking their #$%$. Guess we'll know September 12. Kroger is down because of a market pullback and the Walmart news. When Kroger reports positive sales growth the stock will rally.

    Sentiment: Hold

    • At Smiths, prices are rising and the attitude in the store I shop regularly (Reno, South Meadows Drive) is terrible. There has been complete turnover in store management in the past 8-9 months and the current management spends little time on the sales floor and when on the floor they are in "packs" talking to each other ignoring both customers and other employees.

This is a real contrast to the store management team this store had a year ago. The Store Director was usually in produce, bakery, deli, or out on the sales floor building displays and tried to help every customer. The lower managers followed that example.

      • They've had problems like that for years. Some stores have good people and some don't. Morale has been down for years. What do you expect? A large percentage of Kroger employee's are at minimum wage, with little or no benefits, and no future ever. What kind of employee's are you going to get when you're paying bottom of the scale wages? When you have an in-balance like that. The regular employee's do the lions share of the work and the others just show up for a check. Who cares, the stock just hit a 52 week high right?

        Sentiment: Buy

      • I should clarify about the prices. It used to be, Smiths beat the competition on numerous dairy and staple items. But they keep increasing their prices while competition is making decreases.

Milk: Smiths used to always be the best deal in town on milk. Now 3.39 for a gallon of Mountain Dairy Skim Milk. I can go to Raleys or Safeway and they have gallon nonfat everyday at 2.98 or 2.99; I can go to Sams Club and get a gallon of nonfat for 2.45. I can go to Wal Mart or WinCo and the gallon of milk is 2.88-2.97.

Butter: Smiths is up to a 2.88 "everyday low price" on butter. Meanwhile WinCo and Wal Mart are around 2.50, Raleys 2.98 (everyday price), Safeway 2.99 (everyday price). Raleys and Safeway used to be close to $4 on butter a year ago and at that time Smiths everyday price was 2.50 or 2.29 a significant savings.

Many center store items are still cheaper but not nearly as much so as before.

    • Walmart disappoint has nothing to do with Krogers.
