I've been long since Q4 2003 and it has been a very rewarding stock for me. They seem to be doing the right thing by shareholders by paying a dividend and buying back stock. They aren't the screaming bargain they once were, but they are certainly well-positioned to profit from increased deathrates in the U.S. Also, could be some solid near-term earnings increases because of the recent merger with Alderwoods.
Negatives are the increasing cremation rates and some significant debt. (They reduced their debt level over the last couple years, but I'm not sure of the net affect from the Alderwoods merger.
I'm still holding but not adding to my position in SCI because my 10,000 pound gorilla is Dearfoams (DFZ). They make comfort slippers and other footwear accessories. I'm putting all of my new money in this stock. This might be another play for ya especially with an aging population. They have been growing earnings 10% a year for the last couple after a remarkable turnaround, and they are targeting new growth areas in new retailers. They have a conference call on May 14 which you can listen to and see if you are interested. Good luck and happy investing.
