It is common knowledge that Smithfield used Carrageenan aka Seaweed in some of their products last year. It is a filler & replaces meat & allows more water to be pumped into ham withing purging or floating in the bag which = more profits, less quality. Here is the kicker.
The Joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives states "that based on the information available, it is inadvisable to use carrageenan or processed eucheuma seaweed in infant formulas". There is evidence from studies performed on rats, guinea pigs and monkeys which indicates that degraded carrageenan (poligeenan) may cause ulcerations in the gastro-intestinal tract and gastro-intestinal cancer.
u need to do your homework before espousing your lack of knowledge of food and the purpose of food ingredients. yes, carrageenen is from sea weed but it is used as a moisture retention ingredient. it also is a water retention chemical that perhaps you find in the cheap turkey breast you buy at your deli does not bleeed to death of water in your deli case or at home. Starch does the same thing. it holds water, you payfor water which is less than meat not pumped and thus why the product is cheaper, turkey as an example.
havent read of anybody dying overdosing on carrageenen
Hey Jet. Have you ever heard of Listeria ? Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative anaerobe, intracellular bacterium that is the causative agent of Listeriosis. It is one of the most virulent foodborne pathogens with 20 to 30 percent of clinical infections resulting in death. Responsible for approximately 2,500 illnesses and 500 deaths in the United States (U.S.) annually, Listeriosis is the leading cause of death among foodborne bacterial pathogens with fatality rates exceeding even Salmonella and Clostridium botulinum.
The plant that I was in tested positive daily, it is a bacteria that thrives in cold wet environments, found in drains, ceiling ref. units, on pkg. equiptment & even on the walls & floor, it didn't help with all the puddles of water standing either. Product was usually put on hold WHEN they found it, sometimes...oops.
Its untelling how many ppl that SMITHFIELD has killed, they like to try to keep a low profile of those kind of things or numbers. Yeah you were right about the water thing, Just as Starch does, So then You must also know that means SMITHFIELD is re-selling SEAWEED for upwards $4-5.00 per lb.
I would be happy to sell you all you want at a discount if you would perfer to eat seaweed instead of actual meat.
