Relistor is a good drug with a very promising future

Despite the depressed stock price, I think Relistor has a very bright future. Without going into specific detail, I want to tell you something that happened recently.
I'm a ER doc and I saw a patient who was on codeine for back pain and she came into the ER with constipation which failed her attempts to manage this problem at home. She had serious other medical issues (not cancer/terminal), and an enema in the ER caused her a lot of distress and failed to give any results. I wasn't sure what to do next and was considering admission to the hospital, a very expensive proposition. The patient's nurse came up to me and asked me "what about giving her that 'shot' that worked for some previous patients". Great idea, so I gave her Relistor with extremely impressive results and the patient was extremely grateful.
I just want to thank Salix and PGNX for their great drug and based on my experience, despite FDA pushback, I think Relistor has a great future.

    • Is Relistor back on the formulary of the insurance plans accepted in your hospital? I wonder if Salix is doing a better job promoting the drug. Now that oral Relistor has a very long road ahead and competing drugs are not an imminent threat, perhaps Salix should put more effort in selling the subq drug. Also, how often do you prescribe the drug to non-cancer patients and are there any kind of reimbursement for offlabel use?
