I am going to apologize if a slight was inferred by any of the citizens of this country who are trying to do the right thing by joining the military. I don't know if you are a lifer, but I do know that here, at least, military service is a pretty good way to earn some benefits like a good education, technical training, VA benefits etc. I have seen a number of young people who seem to see the military as someplace you get to wear a beret. As, 'Americans' whatever that means, we are fighting people who will fight to the death, because that is preferrable to their standards of living. Through history, Islam has done its share of invading and empire building. Past glories of a proud people can sometimes be a motivating force. You have no jobs or economy, all you have are the memories of past greatness. I don't think Mr. Bush is long wrong on his axis theory. Pyongyang shoved a missle right down Madeline Albrights throat. His public announcement was a little unneeded, but I guess he has to say something. Envy breeds resentment. A mandated prohibition on attaining the 'good things in life' breeds fury. How many millions have been spent by the Pentagon in Vietnam, Mogadishu, and Iraq to defeat 'enemies' who are still there? Maybe I should not have criticized the soldiers, but rather the general military policy that puts the people who run the show so far from the trenches and so close to Wall St. When I say the US doesn't understand the cultures we are engaged with, I mean that, for example, why would we 'demand' anything from China? Why would we think threats or religous discourse or any of the traditional Western ploys would have any meaning to a country who knows that our market based economy needs them like a parched throat needs water. We are the mightiest producing nation on earth, but that don't mean diddly IF WE DONT HAVE SOMEBODY TO SELL OUR STUFF TO!! I have more to ramble about, but I have to go to work now. Your posts are always thoughtful and interesting, and I am sure you are a competant pilot. If my opinions upset your wife, again, I apologize.

Man, you're not helping your case! I used to work in a veterans home, preparing meals. Some guys were handicapped for life due to limbs having been blown off or amputated. One guy was missing half of his face. Lived that way for ~45 years as of the last time I saw him. Awful hard to get a date when you look like that! And those are the visible wounds. There are a lot of psychological consequences to being shot at (and hit), not to mention being a POW, with the beatings, neglect, starvation and torture, or watching your friends die.
