The U.S. Marshals Service has withdrawn 240 inmates from a privately run jail near San Antonio after the escape last week.
The escape happened just five weeks after the Frio County Detention Center in Pearsall was ruled noncompliant with state regulations because of overcrowding and understaffing.
Police were notified by a resident who spotted five men in jail garb walking through the South Texas town of 8,200 people.
The 240 federal prisoners were removed from the 390-bed jail Saturday. They were moved to several facilities throughout the region. The firm that runs the jail CSC of Sarasota, Fla. responded Tuesday by laying off 35 of the jail's 58 employees, said Pearsall Mayor Roland Segovia.
Mr. Segovia said there have been four other jailbreaks during the last eight years at the Frio County jail. Are we waiting for someone to get murdered?" he asked.
I'm not surprised about the escape or the pull out of the feds. What I am surprised about is that this hasn't woke anyone up yet. I'm also surprised that no one reported on the three separate escape incidents they had at the Eagle Lake Juvenile Facility since January this year. I think the number was about 10 or so youth. What is going on with CSC-YSI. Where is Fred Bagley when you need him or even Jill Watson or Jack Patton for that matter. We need people that know what they are doing.
