    Pahokee Youth Development Center
    Contract Terminated

    TALLAHASSEE, FLDepartment
of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Secretary W.G. "Bill"
Bankhead announced today that DJJ and Correctional
Services Corporation have jointly agreed to terminate the
current contract for the operation of the 350 bed,
Pahokee Youth Development Center. Correctional Services
Corporation (CSC) notified the department on Monday, August
23, 1999 that they did not intend to seek renewal of
the current contract which expires June 30, 2000.

Secretary Bankhead citing the importance of a smooth and
seamless transition in the program has agreed with
Correctional Services Corporation to expedite termination of
the contract, targeting a 60 day window to complete
the transition. "Once the decision was made by
Correctional Services Corporation not to seek renewal, I felt
strongly that it was important to proceed with the
business of securing an alternative provider arrangement
for this critical program," stated Secretary
    Bankhead.

The Department and Correctional Services Corporation
staff will work closely together over the next 60 days
while in transition to ensure there is no disruption in
services at the facility, and to augment and support
current operations. "ID LIKE TO STRESS HOW IMPORTANT
CORRECTIONAL SERVICES CORPORATIONS COOPERATION HAS BEEN AND
WILL BE THROUGH OUT THIS PERIOD OF TRANSITION," stated
    Secretary Bankhead.

    Press release verbatim.
    Upper-case added.

    • let's hope that CSC handles the transition of
this facility as well as they handled the Clarinda
Academy transition...there too, they assured folks that
they wanted a "smooth and seamless transition..." 60
days and one home plate later they had managed to
alienate anyone and everyone remotely involved with the
facility. I wonder what happens when they (CSC) don't favor
      a smooth transition? Land mines??

      I predict
that CSC will be losing (I mean will "not seek
renewal") of more YSI contracts (only because they are
"unprofitable" of course)in the next few months. THEY DO NOT
      UNDERSTAND THE JUVENILE CORRECTIONS BUSINESS....
