As those of you who follow the defense industry know, this is extremely rare and great news. Most of the time large programs fall behind -- rarely are they accelerated multiple years due to really strong prototype results. iRobot must be working overtime on this! An announcement that the Army has pushed this contract forward to 2008 delivery will send this stock soaring and completely change the playing field. My take -- buy as much as you can afford now. There won't be a "next time" to pick this stock up at a $14 price-tag. 6 - 12mo forecast could easily be $30+ depending on what happens with FCS SUGV and the new home products. Hold on, here we go!
Exactly the news I was looking for. But I am just curious:
<<<Prototypes are being tested by scientists with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa. Some of the algorithms the ARL have worked on are just marvelous, Resnick said. It [the robot] can figure out how to get there as it traverses the terrain. It has the means to determine if it can go through the next three meters or so, and if not, go around the obstacle.>>>
Will iRobot get ownership of that intellectual property (algorithms and whatnot) that ARL is working on? I think that IP will be of great value to iRobot in their other lines of business and for sale of military style robots to Homeland Security, SWAT, etc. Just curious if they get the rights to EVERYTHING or just what the army lets them have.
