    FDA approval for MNKD's AFREZZA

When the FDA approves AFREZZA for diabetes, this will deal a terrible blow to the prospects for the vastly overhyped Byetta once weekly.

AFREZZA (all but free of side effects) will change the way the disease is treated without all the nasty side effects of Byetta listed below:

    ---------------------------------------

The United States Food and Drug Administration has recently released a warning about the side effects of Byetta, as at least 30 cases of pancreatitis have been reported among prescribed users of the diabetes drug. At present, six prescribed users of Byetta have died, and while it is not known if the drug played a role in their deaths, each of the six people were suffering from pancreatitis before passing away. Twenty-two of the people reporting symptoms of pancreatitis have experienced improved health – if not complete remission – after discontinuing use of Byetta. Of the 30 reported cases, only five have reported greater kidney damage.

The FDA has issued these warning signs of pancreatitis for prescribed users of Byetta:

    *

Pain in any regions of the abdomen or throughout the abdomen, most commonly from front to back
    *

    Nausea, vomiting
    *

    Increased or decreased blood pressure
    *

    Elevated heart or respiratory rates

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, the long gland that produces enzymes and hormones that aid the body in digestion and regulating blood sugar levels, respectively. There are two forms of pancreatitis – acute and chronic. Acute pancreatitis appears unexpectedly, lasting for a few days at a time. Chronic pancreatitis, however, develops gradually and lasts for a long period of time. Acute and mild cases can go away with no long-term detriment to a person’s health, however chronic cases can cause lifelong health complications.

    Serious Side Effects

Like all prescription medications, Byetta was subjected to clinical trials and studies before receiving eventual approval from the FDA. However, also like most prescription medications, Byetta features a variety of side effects from common to serious, especially in light of the 30 cases of pancreatitis. Prescribed users of Byetta that experience any of the following serious side effects should immediately consult a physician or other medical expert:

    *

    Decrease in frequency of urination
    *

    Complete cessation of regular urination
    *

    Dehydration, increase in thirst
    *

    Changes in mood, emotional swings
    *

    Abnormal weight gain
    *

    Swelling
    *

    Complications with breathing
    *

    Severe pains throughout the abdomen
    *

    Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

    Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Byetta, while not life-threatening or serious in nature, are still warning signs of the greater risk of long-term health problems caused by pancreatitis or kidney disease. Prescribed users of Byetta should still seek professional medical treatment and expertise should they experience any of the following common and mild side effects of Byetta:

    *

    Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea
    *

    Decreased or loss of appetite
    *

    Sudden weight loss
    *

    Dizziness or lightheadedness
    *

    Headache
    *

    Physical unrest
