Alan Mulally has an outstanding track record from Ford Motor and Boeing, but most likely wouldn't be the right guy to lead Microsoft to success.
Rather, what Microsoft needs to become relevant in the consumer space again are Marissa Mayer and Yahoo!
Not only is Marissa Mayer the right person to re-invent Microsoft, but Yahoo! is as important for Microsoft's competitive matrix as it was when it bid for the company last time.
Mayer's name keeps coming up as a likely candidate for Microsoft CEO. Mayer will end the search agreement with Bing in 2015. If Microsoft wants Bing to be a success they will need Yahoo and Marissa Mayer.
Microsoft would solve two big problems if they buy Yahoo and get Mayer as CEO. Bing search would be in the hands of an expert and they would have a CEO that knows what's hot and what's not.
yahoo board will not agree until alibaba stake is monitized i.e alibaba ipo then you can know full value of yahoo.. yahoo is $34bil now +alibaba(say $30 bil). then add 20% premium and you are talking $80 bil.
ney microsoft board wouldn't play
