the glut of sales in the second calendar quarter was due to the need to demonstrate three months of meaningful use in 2013 to qualify for government subsidies to doctors of $14,000 for first year use.
The docs bought the systems in Q2, got installed in Q3, and are now trying to rack up three months of meaningful use in Oct, Nov and Dec.
For next year those who had meaningful use this year qualify for meaningful use next year (their second year) by having it running for 12 months which is irrelevant to the plight of Athena. They already bought the system.
But for new sales the first year;s meaningful use next year is also three months. Which means that there will be no push to buy until second quarter of next year.
BUT. Rightly or wrongly the early adopters adopted and the balance of the potential prospects are waiting to see if the early adopters ever get paid and they also question whether the government will continue meaningful use subsidies in the future.
Rightly or wrongly they believed Romney was going to scuttle it. But also rightly or wrongly most doctors detest Obama and do not trust him. It is ironic given that Obama wittingly or unwittingly is the best things for doctors since Medicare began to lift them up from the middle class to the upper class starting in the 1960's by subsidizing medical care via Medicare. But doctors are not the brightest bulbs on the shelf. They are just good at memorizing things.
