Check Point to Work With Broadcom on Products to Speed Security By Greg Chang
Ramat-Gan, Israel, Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., the No. 1 maker of software for blocking hacker attacks, said it is working with chipmaker Broadcom Corp. to develop products to accelerate secure Internet transmissions.
Security software sometimes bogs down Internet traffic by taxing computers which have to scramble and unscramble information to keep the data private. Check Point is working with Broadcom to develop chips that help computers perform security functions more rapidly. The chips will work with Check Point's ``virtual private network'' software which lets corporations exchange information with customers and employees across a secure Internet connection.
Products from the alliance could allow Check Point to earn more income from its customer base of about 55,000 corporations which have purchased virtual private network software. Broadcom is looking to boost sales of chips with security functions to complement its products for network switches and cable modems.
``Customers want to ensure that security is never a bottle neck,'' said Asheem Chanda, Check Point's vice president of business development.
The first products from Check Point and Broadcom, to be available in November, will cost about $1,000. Financial details and sales forecasts weren't disclosed.
Check Point is also working with Broadcom rival Intel Corp. on a similar alliance.
Broadcom earlier this year bought closely-held security-chip designer BlueSteel Networks Inc.
