    Marketing info

I'll end my participation on the previous string with one final comment: Insurers can and have made good money on law firms; there are lots of law firms in this market.

Broker contacts are confirming that the flow of business away from CareFirst is continuing.
Let's hope this continues for 1/1/2004 business which is the most common renewal date. Any firm facts from anyone else on this?

I'm concerned about an increase in Mamsi's average legnth of stay. Any informed comments here?

I think the market will bear continued premium increases. I doubt the EPS increases will be the same by percentage but I expect an uninterrupted advance past $4.00 per share.

Earnings for 2004 should support $60 per share.

    • MAMSI could very well be exposed to higher hospital costs in late 2004 as the Maryland hospitals will push for higher rates. Key changes in the Maryland Medicaid program will lead to greater uncompensated care and the HSCRC will come under pressure from MD hospitals to raise rates.

In addition, CareFirst will likely attempt to lowball rates in the small group market in an attempt to win back goodwill from regulators. If this is the case, the price gap will close. Whether the damage done to the Cross/Shield brand is enough to overcome this smaller gap remains to be seen.
