    BUY MSFT or AT&T ?

    AT&T
    Share Price +-$30.60
    Dividend 5.7%
    Forward P/E 12.11
    ROE 18.88%
    Book Value $19.02 / share
Projected Value = Upside 20 -25% if merger goes through

    MSFT
    Share Price +- $24.10
    Dividend 2.7%
    Forward P/E 8.71
    ROE 43.96%
    Book value $6.34 / share
    Projected Value = Upside 20 - 25% if...???

    Both great companies.

Hard to argue AT&T isn't the safer pick, especially in a down market.
    Yield is much better.
AT&T has a catalyst on the horizen, plus they are currently on the side of one of the biggest secular trends in the market, mobile computing.

    On the other hand...

    MSFT bought Skype.
Google is killing MSFT on mobile.
Apple's iCloud may eat into MSFT profits long term?
Apple's tablet is taking a big bite out of traditional computers.
Online Gaming is a bright spot for MSFT, but will that segment be able to produce outsize profits?

    Care to add any comments?

    • I like VOD better.

    • AT&T is better buy, up 20% year over year. Sells Apple products iPhone, Ipad. This is main reason for gain.

MSFT down 8% year over year. Supports low profit, inferior products. The standard stock measures do not apply because of failed strategies in past 10 years. Losing its enterprise market.

    • I own both.

MSFT has much better balance sheet than T. MSFT has cash to use on acquisitions. They need to chose the right targets and will be fine.

My concern with T is its balance sheet after T Mobile deal. I think it's more risky than MSFT right now because VZ could squeeze them if they buy S or, what really concerns me, if they are bought by GOOG or AAPL. Then they try to make the smart phone obsolete with some next generation tablet/phone/pda hybrid. I own VZ as well.

Also, I don't like that T does not have Uverse avaiable for my house.

      • I still like 500 horsepower computers that dim the neighbor lights. Don't own a cell, tablet, or any of those other small devices. Windows 7 Ultimate x64 is a really nice OS. I also run Slackware on my main server. When I am away from the computer I am with my Sansa Clip listening to music while riding my bikes. Windows 8 will be a fantastic OS specially running the new AMD Bulldozer Chip.

      • MSFT has a better balance sheet.

But T is a utility, and is subject to somewhat different analysis. It has protections and monopolistic tendencies that MSFT can only dream of.

You bring up a good point. I expect a pop from the T-Mobile deal, and that might be a good time to sell T.

Better to be in Google or AAPL longterm than either T or MSFT.

Short term (under a year) is another matter though.

    • MSFT about to enter the Tablet arena with Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10, Java 5.0.

      • MSFT is a good defensive stock.

But here is my take on the Tablet Arena.

Apple has a commanding lead. If you want market share, you need to either undercut IPAD pricing by a significant percentage, or, you need to have a much better product.

To date, MSFT has NOT convinced me it can out execute Apple.
        Zune Vs Ipods
Tablet PC Vs Airbooks and IPAD
W-7 Handsets & Nokoa Vs Iphones
        Windows Vista/ W-7 VS Mac O/S
        ??? Vs Apple TV
        Adobe Flash=Crash Vs HTML5
Packaging of ANY MSFT product Vs ANY Apple Product
MSFT even got smoked Even the stipid "PC Vs MAc ads.

Now MSFT has a tablet, 2 years later than they should have, and Apple is working on the Icloud. And MSFT buys Skype?!?

The best news about MSFT in thge last two years has been they are now collecting $5 on every HTC Android phone from that patent decision in May, and the fact they made a small investment in FaceBook (and they DID NOT buy Yahoo)!

I would hold MSFT, as a defensive, dividend stock.
But for new money? Not looking like the best option.
At least, don't buy MSFT for it's Tablet capabilities...

AT&T and Verizon win no matter what Apple or MSFT does....

(If the merger goes through, I think AT&T wins bigger than VZ.)
